In October 2013, the Institute for Policy Studies celebrated its 50th anniversary with a three-day festival of panels, workshops, and a gala at Union Station in Washington, DC.
For the festival's designed materials, I used bright, handpainted watercolor that I scanned in and made into vectors for scalability.
The committee planning the 50th desired that the invitations include some sort of artistic graphic or piece. On the back of the invitations — a trifold printed on textured watercolor stock —I sketched the Institute's co-founders, Marcus Raskin and Richard Barnett, and painted a watercolor cloud layered with significant moments from the Institute's 50-year history, in roughly chronological order. Layered images I pulled for this piece included newspaper clippings, historical documents, book covers, photographs, protest posters, and images from the mural in IPS' conference room.
Other materials created for the festival included a festival program booklet, donor dinner menu, and gala program; designs for event favors such as coffee mugs, magnets, and totes; banners and signage; and online and print advertisements for the event.
