Annual Report: 35 Years of Impact
The 2015 Annual Report for the Project On Government Oversight, celebrating 35 years of investigations and impact.
For the 2015 Annual Report, the Project On Government Oversight desired something that would include accomplishments from the past 35 years, since the report would be published the same year as POGO's 35th anniversary.
POGO's previous annual reports were usually in the style of an 8.5x11 booklet, and while this provided plenty of space, it was also expensive to print and ship to donors and supporters.
More and more organizations are using microsites in lieu of, or in conjunction with, an annual report. Given POGO's audience — which tends to skew older and prefer print products — and also the limited time frame for producing this product, I proposed a redesign where the report itself would be a self-contained mailer (as that is the primary way POGO distributes its report) — but one with a similar look and feel to a modern microsite.
The mailer, a six-panel roll fold, fit just under the shipping limit for a letter (shaving off about $1.50 in mailing fees per product) and wrapped into itself without a need for an envelope, saving on printing costs.
The inside included a note from POGO's Executive Director, 2015 accomplishments, brief significant moments from the past 35 years, and financial data. I came up with the idea to intersperse little facts throughout (the dark grey boxes) with tidbits such as how many billions POGO has saved taxpayers over the years, the number of times POGO testified before Congress in 2015, major media hits and outlets, a social media snapshot, etc. The back of the mailer included an About section, the front cover, the mailer, and listed all of POGO's supporters from $100 and up.
