The Letelier-Moffitt Human Rights Awards is an annual human rights awards ceremony hosted by the Institute for Policy Studies since 1978. The awards — held in honor of two fallen IPS staff (Ronni Moffitt and Orlando Letelier) who were assassinated in 1976 — celebrate little-known champions of the human rights movement both in the U.S. and abroad.
I created branding for this annual event in 2014 both to unify the Institute's materials (which date back to 1976) moving forward and to reflect the somber and hopeful nature of the awards. For 38 years, the event's materials have featured the woodcut illustrations of Naúl Ojeda, a Latin American artist close to the Letelier family. I did not wish to break with this tradition, and instead incorporated and repurposed Ojeda's illustrations to create an Art Deco-inspired design that fit the event's venue at the Carnegie Institution for Science.
